Perfect enclosure with a PMP as "bonus"

Posted by Sandosan on 05-11-2010
Involvement: Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
Price:
Ease of Use:
Build Quality:
Usefulness:
Overall Rating:
Pros:- You can play DVD's directly from VIDEO_TS map or even images like .ISO- Has no prob's with codecs as xvid or aac- Small and handy, witch makes it very portable
Cons:- Can't show .sub/.iDTW subtitles; show wrong colors or hang after a few minutes- Can't change the color or size of the .srt subtitles, wich make it quite useless- Doesn't recognize characters like é,è,ë etc.- Instable with NTFS; can't copy, move or delete etc. with NTFS- DVD playing hangs a few second when going to a next chapter- When resuming a DVD from a few minutes pause the device will hang completly
Other Thoughts:First I had 1 NTFS partition and 1 FAT32.The device completely crashed after a while, and PMP didn't worked. After I removed all my data (in pc mode, witch continued to work) I formatted every partition to FAT32.
Bottomline:100% perfect when used as a Hard Disk USB 2.0 enclosureThe PMP function is sort of a bonus and has a very instable firmware (Hdd.2.6.2.96.f11). When playing divx/xvid best thing is to have burned subs to avoid subtitle problems. Watching DVD's can be annoying when having a lot of chapters in it..Buy, you can't go wrong with it compared to the price.

500GB

Involvement: Novice (still getting used to it) - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
Price:
Ease of Use:
Build Quality:
Usefulness:
Overall Rating:
Pros:Driver installation is not required. 250GB hard drive you can use immediately.
Cons:500GB hard drive, it can not be used as a PMP. "Searching" can not even leave the default setting.Sensitivity is a good remote control. Do not feel pressed, very easy to use and get used to.High bit-rate video (1280x720) is, XviD playback has been skipped as it is not recognized.
Other Thoughts:The 500GB hard drive, 250GB now available to create a partition.250GB for each partition that is recognized below.
Bottomline:Depending on future firmware updates might be easy to use.

Cheap and ok player

Pros:-Cheap-Pretty good build quality-Easy to use-Good compatibilityIt was very simple to connect to my TV, and it read both sd card and my external hd(WD Passport) woth no problems. Was able to play all the different files I tried except .ogg
Cons:-Not great performanceAlthough it played all the different codecs, it still had problems playing some of the movies I had which had a bit high bitrate. The lagg is really annoying and the sound gets out of sync, so it's hopeless to see those movies. You could re-code the movies with a bit lower bitrate, but it might be time-consuming.
Other Thoughts:
Bottomline:It's a great player if you have movies or series with low bitrates, ie. old series or films, but if you are like me, watching the newest series and films in good quality, I wouldn't recommend it.
