| Pros:LightVery small enclosureNice ruberised textureWorks with either one or two usb cables meaning that i don't have to carry around the USB power cable if i dont want to | |
| Cons:Took a little while for Windows 7 to register this device. When first plugged into a Windows 7 machine it searched for drivers and the failed. I disconnected and then reconnected and it worked perfectly. | |
| Bottomline:Only $20 less than a comparable (and possibly better) product in Australia. Went for it and pleased i did. It is a very small form factor and has a nice rubber finish. Very light which will make it a good addition to my IT tool kit for onsite client visits. | |

| Pros:Very nice looking and small drive, seems to work well enough at reading DVD's.I tested it on two systems, one running Windows XP and the other running Linux (Fedora 11), and in both cases it worked properly without any drivers.Read speeds seemed about as fast as my internal DVD drive, though I didn't run any benchmarks. | |
| Cons:Included cords are very short (about two feet long). The drive itself has an IBM label on it, and so did the box it came in... but when I plug it in, Windows identifies it as a Sony drive. I'm guessing it's probably neither... but as long as it works properly, who cares what brand name it is?Regarding the build quality: Eject button was a little finicky. Pushing discs in also seemed to catch on something and had to be pushed somewhat hard. These are extremely minor issues though. When I first tried to use it, I had it plugged in through a front-panel USB hub and it didn't seem to work. Plugging it into a read-panel USB port worked perfectly though. I'm guessing this was likely an issue with hub and not the drive itself. | |
| Other Thoughts:Having to use a separate cord for power is rather inconvenient, and it would have been better if it had just come with an AC adapter instead. This came with a driver disc (un unlabelled DVD-R) that included three versions of Nero and PowerDVD 4. My guess is that they are pirated, and I was worried about possible viruses, so I didn't try installing any of them. The disc also has directories with Chinese characters in them, which may cause problems for some people. | |
| Bottomline:I bought this to use with a netbook I plan on buying, with the main intent being to read data DVD's and maybe watch movies... and for this purpose, it seems like it will meet my needs.I haven't tried to burn any discs using this yet, as I never really intended do. DTW seems to sell a range of similar drives with slight differences in capabilities, and I decided to spend the extra money on this one just in case burning discs came in handy later. | |
